3: BASE CLOTHS & CHOOSING THE RIGHT ONE FOR INTERIORS
Choosing the best base cloths
When it comes to digital fabric printing, choosing the best base cloths makes all the difference. After testing countless materials over more than a decade of interior projects, I’ve found that the best base cloths for digital fabric printing are the ones that balance print quality, texture, and performance, cotton, linen, and FR cotton canvas.
After more than a decade working on hospitality and residential projects, I’ve tested countless fabrics and while there are many options out there, three always rise to the top for interiors:
Cotton
Linen-cotton mix
FR cotton canvas
Each offers the perfect balance of print quality, texture, and performance ideal for cushions, curtains, upholstery, and soft furnishings that need to look as good as they last.
Why Base Cloth Choice Matters
Every fabric absorbs ink differently. The same artwork printed across two cloths can look completely distinct.
Linen gives a natural, matte look, while cotton often prints a little softer, and polyester tends to deliver brighter, more saturated tones.
That doesn’t mean one’s better than another, it simply means choosing the right base cloth is part of the design process.
Understanding these nuances helps you predict colour, texture, and overall feel, so your final result lands exactly as you envisioned.
My Top Three for Interiors
1. Cotton: the Reliable All-Rounder
Cotton has always been a favourite for interior furnishings. It’s breathable, soft, and strong giving a natural finish that feels timeless in any scheme.
When digitally printed, cotton offers slightly muted colour results, so I recommend increasing your artwork’s saturation or contrast by around 20% for a richer outcome.
Best for: cushions, lampshades, and drapery where softness and natural character are key.
2. Linen-Cotton Mix: the Designer’s Sweet Spot
This blend combines the structure of cotton with the beautiful texture of linen, delivering both print precision and tactile luxury.
It drapes elegantly yet holds its shape, ideal for statement cushions, headboards, and boutique hotel interiors.
You’ll notice occasional tiny unprinted spots or slubs in the weave, these are part of the charm of natural fibres and a reminder that you’re working with something authentic.
If you prefer an ultra-flat, flawless print, polyester may suit better, but personally I love the handcrafted feel of natural fibre blends.
3. FR Cotton Canvas: the Hospitality Hero
For commercial interiors, flame-retardant cotton canvas is my go-to. It’s heavyweight, structured, and extremely durable, perfect for upholstery and high-traffic spaces.
Its slightly muted print result gives a sophisticated matte look that pairs beautifully with layered textures and bespoke detailing.
Bonus: its weight gives cushions and drapery a luxurious finish that feels tailored and substantial, no limp fabrics here.
A Few Notes on Natural Fibre Printing
Working with natural fibres like cotton and linen means embracing small imperfections. These materials have tiny slubs and tufts that may move during printing, occasionally leaving minute unprinted dots. Anything under 5mm is considered part of the fabric’s natural character; anything larger would be treated as a fault.
To get the clearest sense of how a fabric behaves, I always offer samples so you can handle the materials in person.
Why Not Polyester?
Polyesters print with incredible colour depth and brightness, thanks to dye-sublimation technology but they’re better suited to outdoor or high-performance applications rather than tactile interior settings.
For interior designers looking for that soft, elevated, “natural fibre” aesthetic, cotton and linen blends are far more at home.
In Summary
Choosing the right base cloth is about more than print quality — it’s about understanding how texture, tone, and tactility contribute to your design story.
After years of testing, my top picks are cotton, linen-cotton mix, and FR cotton canvas having consistently delivered the best balance of beauty, durability, and print performance for bespoke interior projects.
