FR BASICS – A SUPER SIMPLE GUIDE

FR (FIRE RETARDENT) requirements can feel confusing especially when you’re choosing fabrics for hospitality or digital printing projects.
 Here’s the simplest version so you know what to ask, what to check, and when to call me in.

 

When FR Is Needed

In most commercial or contract projects, FR isn’t optional — it’s part of staying compliant and protecting the end user.

You’ll usually need FR for:

  • Hotels, bars, restaurants, offices and public areas
  • Upholstered seating — sofas, armchairs, banquettes, dining chairs, bar stools
  • Large soft surfaces — curtains, drapes, walling, hotel headboards

If it’s a public space or gets heavy use, assume FR is required.

 

Quick Upholstery Rule (UK)

For upholstered items, the rule of thumb is simple:

If the fabric is under 75% natural fibre,
 it cannot be interlined and will usually require a full FR treatment.

If it’s over 75% natural fibre and the project is domestic,
 you may be able to use an interliner — but this doesn’t apply to contract settings.

For commercial projects, always take the safe route:
 check the FR requirement before you specify or print.

 

Common Red Flags to Avoid

These are the issues that cause most FR headaches and they’re easy to avoid once you know them.

1. Not knowing the fibre composition

“Poly mix” isn’t enough.
 You need the exact percentages — it determines the FR route.

2. Using fabric without a certificate

If there’s no FR certificate, treat it as non-compliant.
 (Hotels and contractors absolutely will.)

This is especially important with digitally printed fabrics, where the base cloth and the ink system both matter.

 

Choose the Correct FR Route

To confirm which FR option you need before printing, you need to know these points:

  1. End use (e.g., hotel banquette, curtains, walling)
  2. Setting (restaurant, hotel, bar, domestic)
  3. Full fibre composition

With these, you can get advice for me or another to tell you the safest, correct and still aesthetically pleasing FR approach, no guesswork.
