PRINT FINISHES & FIXATION A SUPER SIMPLE GUIDE

Once your design is printed onto the fabric, it still has one final stage to go through finishing.
This is the step that locks in the colour, improves durability, and gives the fabric its final hand-feel.

Here’s the simple version.

 

What Is Fixation?

Fixation is how your printed design gets “set” into the fabric.
It makes sure the colours don’t rub off, wash out, or fade too quickly.

Different fabrics need different methods, but the two most common are:

  • Heat setting: used for polyester and blends
  • Steaming: used for natural fibres like cotton or linen

Both do the same job: they permanently bond the ink to the cloth.

 

Why Fixation Matters

Without proper fixation, your fabric might:

  • lose colour vibrancy
  • fade after sunlight exposure
  • wash out faster
  • feel rough or inconsistent

It’s a short step but an essential one.

 

Finishing Touches

After fixation, the fabric often goes through simple finishing processes such as:

  • Heat pressing for smoothness
  • Softening to improve handle
  • Stabilising to reduce shrinkage
  • Calendering for a subtle sheen

These tiny adjustments make a big difference to how the final product looks and performs.

 

Every Fabric Behaves Differently

Cotton, velvet, linen, canvas, poly-blends…
Each responds differently to heat, steam, pressure and chemicals.

This is why finishing is a skill not a button you press.

Good finishing can make a fabric look premium.
Bad finishing can ruin a print completely.
